Abstract

In recent years, residential group care has often been viewed as a structurally flawed modality, and community-based models have been developed in part to take its place. Yet it may be that more effective approaches within the gorup care arena have simply not been implemented on a broad scale and , in any case, many thousands of young people will continue to be placed in residential settings for the foreseeable future. The present article reviews conceptual approaches to understanding and enhancing residential group care enviornments and proposes an alternatiove approach that can be applied to non-residential settings as a basis for program development and evaluation.
