Abstract

This article is intended as part of series of articles looking at the experiences of aboriginal populations in both Ireland and Canada to be published simultaneously in two academic journals - subject, of course, to editorial permission and favourable peer reviews. The 'researched Traveller experience' has been well documented in Irish studies (Attitudes to Minorities, 2001: Daly, 1988; Duggan-Jackson, 2000; MacGreil; 1996) and is represented in this article through inclusion of recent research studies. In the true spirit of consultation, collaboration with Travellers in the design, and writing of this article would be very appropriate. However, this article is not intended to replicate studies already completed, many of which are written in direct consultation with Travellers, and Traveller communities in various parts of Ireland. As such, this commentary will give a review of the 'researched Traveller experience' in the context of key social care areas affecting the Traveller community in Ireland. The research team hopes to include commentary from Traveller and Aboriginal children and youth in our third and final paper.
