Abstract

This keynote address was given to the Maine Association of Group Care Providers on May 9, 2002 at their 3rd annual statewide youth worker conference, "Violence: Challenges for Youth Care Practice". The address combines the authors' personal and professional experiences living in and working with a culture of violence. The author's life experience and academic research lead us to consider the influence of family cultures that create and perpetuate violence. The author also offers suggestions for youth workers in identifying their own experiences, emotions and coping strategies in working through the transition away from violence - for themselves and for the youth they work with.
