Abstract

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has employed Child and Youth Workers to help address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students within its elementary and secondary schools. A number of CYW roles have evolved. Additional educational jurisdictions in Ontario and other provinces have begun to utilize CYWs to deliver supportive services to students. This paper summarizes evolution of a model of Child and Youth Work developed within the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and provides an overview of the philosophy and practice of CYWs employed. It is believed that school based Child and Youth Work is an expanding area of practice for CYWs and that their experience will be both instructive and valuable to others.
