Abstract

This paper reviews three theoretical approaches to understanding adolescent friendship and romantic relationships: attachment theory, Sullivan and neo-Sullivanian theory, and Imago theory. Each of these approaches was discussed, and research with implications for understanding adolescents' relationships was summarised. This theory and research were used to guide the development of experiential exercises about friendship and love. These are described, so that some of these exercises may be used in developing a workshop focussing on improving adolescents' close relationships.
