Abstract

This paper examines how the talk of child and youth care workers may be analyzed to improve practice. The importance of being able to distinguish empowering, open, and inviting talk from unilateral, controlseeking talk about youth is emphasized. Data from a staff meeting of a youth empowerment program is used to support the claim that both empowering and unilateral languages actually shape this and other youth empowerment programs, despite youth workers' attempts to adopt only an empowering approach to practice.
